The municipality covers an area of 242 km², and has a total population of 9,425 (2005). Its mayor is Søren Risager, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

By January 1, 2007 Sindal municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Hirtshals, Hjørring, and Løkken-Vrå municipalities to form an expanded Hjørring municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 929,58 km² and a total population of ca. 67,816. The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region"). After the reform Hjørring will be the largest municipality on Vendsyssel.
