Six corners
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Six Corners is the most prominent of eight "six corner" intersections in Chicago, Illinois (USA). It is the intersection of Irving Park Road, Cicero Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. It is believed that Native Americans used a ridge along Milwaukee Avenue as a campsite, which would have been higher than the generally swampy surrounding land. Six Corners is located with the Chicago community of Portage Park. Anchored by a Sears department store, Six Corners used to be the largest shopping district in Chicago outside of the downtown Loop. It had fallen on hard times since the trend toward shopping malls. The neighborhood, however, may be experiencing a resurgence as an urban pedestrian shopping district with the recent reopening of the Portage Theater, the upcoming construction of several retail-condo buildings and a street beautification project.
