Since its inception in 2001, Slant Magazine has grown exponentially in content, exposure, and readership. Using a grassroots approach, the site has carved a unique niche for itself in both the online film and music circles. In the last few years, Slant has become known for its edgy, intelligent, and often funny pop cultural criticism. Roger Ebert has called co-founder and film editor Ed Gonzalez a "critic I admire" because of his "forcible writing style."[1] In addition to reviews of film, music, TV and DVD, Slant frequently covers film festivals like the New York Film Festival.

Slant's music section was originally envisioned as a place where pop music could be appreciated unironically, and as an alternative to the more indie-dominated Pitchfork Media, but in recent years more and more indie-rock has been featured on the site.
Both the film and music sections are very vocal about their contempt for Hilary Duff.[2]
Since the Iraq War began, the writing has gotten more political, but the focus remains on entertainment.
Slant employs two different rating systems:
- Films and television programs are rated using the traditional 4-star system.
- Albums and DVDs are rated using a 5-star system.
