All current Straw Hat members have at least one talent in which they are virtually perfect, and several (especially the captain, swordsman, shipwright and cook) have astonishingly inhuman strength. As outlaws, they all have bounties on their heads, and are wanted by the World Government. The World Government and the Navy consider them one of the most dangerous pirate crews in the One Piece world, due to their spectacular evasion of the supposedly unavoidable Buster Call on Enies Lobby.

Each member of the Straw Hats has a dream they want to achieve. These dreams are their reasons for joining Luffy's crew, and essentially the driving force behind their lives. Each Straw Hat's dream was inspired by tragedies in their lives that involved at least one person they idolized or cared for deeply. Whatever the reason, each of the Straw Hats' dreams involves traveling the Grand Line, and each Straw Hat member refuses to die before achieving his or her dream.

Each member of the crew value their friendships above all else. Despite their comic annoyance with each other from time to time, they also often enjoy their time together and love being a member of the crew. One of the major themes of the series is how committed they are to each other. If one single member is hurt by an outside force, the other members will become enraged and take drastic action to avenge their friend.

One of the best examples of this can be seen during the crew's stay in Arabasta, when Chopper asks Zoro on why he joined the crew.[1] Zoro replies that even though it is about their own dreams, that there is something more that they are all striving to achieve.

All the current Straw Hats have bounties over their heads with a total bounty of "700,000,050" Belli.[2]

[edit] Major Antagonists

[edit] Buggy the Clown

Buggy (バギー, Bagī), who was originally intended to be called 'Boogie',[citation needed] accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, which allows him to separate his body parts and control them independent of each other. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to attacks from knives or swords; any such attack just separates him into his component parts. In addition, most of his body is capable of flying through the air, fast enough to propel a man through a wall - with the crucial exception of his feet. However, even though the parts are separate, Buggy can still feel what the part feels. Besides his Devil fruit abilities he usually fights with three knives between his fingers. During the flashbacks of his youth he already used these three knives. He also has a blade hidden in his shoe. He earned himself a 15 million beli bounty.

[edit] Dracule Mihawk

Dracule Mihawk (ジュラキュール・ミホーク Jurakyūru Mihōku?), also known as, "Hawk-Eye" Mihawk is the first of the Shichibukai to be introduced and is Roronoa Zoro’s ultimate goal, as he is considered to be the strongest swordsman in the world. The huge scar on the front of Zoro's torso was given to him by Mihawk during their first duel. In the 4Kids dub he has a French accent and his sword is edited to not resemble a cross.

[edit] Arlong

Arlong (アーロン, Āron) is a feared and ruthless pirate captain, with a bounty of 20 million beli on his head. The Sawshark Fishman and his crew were members of Jimbei's pirate crew, before Jimbei joined the Shichibukai. He is a racist, considering humans to be inferior to Fishmen. Though there are humans he considers to be exceptions, such as the corrupt marine Captain Nezumi, and money-loving Nami. For he values money very high, so high in fact, that he prides himself with never breaking a promise, if it involves money.

[edit] Commodore Smoker

Smoker (スモーカー, Sumōkā, Chaser in edited English dub) is a Marine officer originally stationed in Loguetown as a Captain. Smoker is a cigar enthusiast, keeping plenty of cigars strapped to the left side of his jacket while smoking two lit ones in his mouth. Smoker has the powers of the Logia-type Devil Fruit: Moku Moku no Mi, giving him the power to manipulate, create, control and transform into smoke. Because Cartoon Network will not allow smoking in their broadcast version, Smoker's cigars were edited out of the anime. This gives the appearance of smoke constantly issuing from his mouth.

[edit] Sir Crocodile

Sir Crocodile (サー・クロコダイル Sā Kurokodairu?) first appears in chapter 126, during a phone conversation with Sanji. He is the leader of Baroque Works, under the codename "Mr. 0". After a failed Coup d'état he is stripped of his status as Shichibukai and eventually sent to the Government prison of Impel Down. Crocodile ate the Logia type Devil Fruit Suna Suna no Mi which allows him to create, manipulate, absorb, and transform into sand. He has a tough golden alloy hook in place of a left hand. According to series creator Eiichiro Oda, Crocodile's bounty at the time of his fights with Luffy, would have been more than twice the value of his former bounty of 81 million belli, if reflective of the threat he posed.[3]

[edit] Blackbeard

Marshall D. Teach
Marshall D. Teach

Marshall D. Teach (マーシャル・D・ティーチ, Māsharu D. Tīchi, Marshall D. Teech in edited English dub) better known as Blackbeard (黒ひげ, Kurohige), is modeled and named after the infamous pirate Edward Teach[4] and is a former member of the Whitebeard Pirates. The Yami Yami no Mi grants Teach the ability to create and control gravity fields, represented as a flowing "darkness". He is pursued by Portgas D. Ace for killing a crewmate of his, from whom he stole the Devil Fruit he ate. After beating Ace, he turnes him in to the World Government and is appointed the replacement for Sir Crocodile as a Shichibukai.

[edit] Enel

Raijin (left) and Enel (right)
Raijin (left) and Enel (right)

Enel (エネル), also often romanized as "Eneru", is a Logia-type Devil Fruit user, who gets his power from the Goro Goro no Mi, which allows him to manipulate, absorb, generate and transform into electricity. Using this power, combined with his strong Mantora, the ability to predict a beings movement and to sense any beings position within a certain range, he conquered Upper Yard and Sky Island, where he lets himself be worshiped like a god. As such, he introduces himself with: "Ware ga kaminari",[5] which can be translated to both, "I am lightning" or "I am god". His earlobes are overly long, reminiscent of some depictions of Buddha, reaching down to his free chest, which in turn, along with his wide pants and drums on his back, cause the character to be remarkably resembling of Raijin, a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology.

[edit] Admiral Aokiji

Admiral Aokiji

Aokiji, the "Blue Pheasant" (青キジ), was known as Kuzan prior to his promotion. One of the Vice-Admirals present at the destruction of Ohara, he is responsible for letting Nico Robin go free at that time. He gained Logia Devil Fruit powers after eating the Hie Hie no Mi (ヒエヒエの実 Ice Ice Fruit), it allows him manipulate, create, absorb, generate, control and transform into ice and freeze his opponents.

[edit] Rob Lucci

Rob Lucci (ロブ・ルッチ Robu Rucchi?) first appears as a shipwright in the Galley-La Company. There he uses his pigeon, Hattori (ハットリ, Hattori) to speak for him, using his ventriloquist abilities, giving the impression of not being able to talk normaly.

It is soon revealed, that he is the leader of CP9, who infiltrated the Galley-La company, and is perfectly capable of speaking for himself. Lucci ate the Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard (ネコネコの実 モデル豹(レオパルド), Cat Cat Fruit, Model: Leopard), which allows him to turn into a huge leopard-human hybrid and a full leopard.

[edit] Gecko Moria

Gecko Moria (ゲッコー・モリア Gekkō Moria?) first appears in One Piece Chapter 449, as the captain of the enormous ship Thriller Bark and a member of the Shichibukai, with a 320 million beli bounty formerly on his head. "Koumori" means "bat" in Japanese. He is extremely large and has a devil-like appearance, but is also exceptionally lazy. Moria ate the Devil Fruit Kage Kage no Mi (Shadow Shadow Fruit), giving him control over his own shadow as well as the ability to manipulate the shadows of other things and beings and switch places with his shadow. Moria can place a stolen shadow into a corpse, creating a zombie that is totally obedient to him. Prior to his appearance in the story, Moria fought on the same level as the Yonkou Kaidou, but his crew was killed. This results in Moria's desire to create an army of zombies to fight for him, as they cannot be killed without the aid of salt. He is defeated by Monkey D. Luffy, making him the second Shichibukai Luffy has beaten. His former bounty is the second highest yet revealed. He was not stripped of his status such as Sir Crocodile was due to lack of witnesses, ( pirates would not be counted as adequate witnesses )Sengoku merely said that they will keep him for now and he would be dealt with later.

[edit] Admiral Kizaru

Admiral Kizaru
Admiral Kizaru

Kizaru, the "Yellow Monkey" (黄猿), was known as Borsalino prior to his promotion. The third of the three Admirals, he recently volunteered to take care of the pirates that had harmed the Celestial Dragons at the Yarukiman Mangrove and currently has landed at the Sabaody Archipelago.

He gained the Devil Fruit powers of a Logia after eating the Pika Pika no Mi (ピカピカの実 Sparkle Sparkle Fruit) which grants him various light related abilities. He is able to generate light from any part of his body at will and make his body move at the speed of light. Kizaru was able to stand on a firing cannonball from a Marine warship to land on 27th grove harbour of the Archipelago, it is unclear whether this is a result of skill or something his devil fruit makes possible. He can transform any part of his body into light making him nearly invincible against normal attacks. As shown in chapter 510, his body effortlessly changed into light and reformed himself after getting dismembered and then blown up by Scratchmen Apoo. The light he emits from his body is in the form of powerful laser beams that appear to explode on contact with any surface they do immediately burn through. He believes speed is 'weight'. In Chapter 512 it is revealed that he can shape light into the form of a sword and fight with it. This may be a reference to lightsabers on the author's part.

[edit] Bartholomew Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma (バーソロミュー・くま Bāsoromyū Kuma?) "Kuma" means "bear" in Japanese. Like Doflamingo, his first appearance is at the government summit of Mariejois following Sir Crocodile's defeat in Arabasta, where his former boutny is shown to have been 296 million beli. He is next seen at Thriller Bark, where he offers Gecko Moria his aid in defeating the Straw Hat Crew. According to Gecko Moria, Kuma is the only Shichibukai truly obedient to the World Government.

Kuma possesses the power of the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi (Paw Paw Fruit), one of many fictional Devil Fruits in One Piece. This fruit gives him the ability to repel or reflect anything he touches with his hands. He is even able to repel pain and fatigue from a person making him refresh and relaxed. This is shown in chapter 485 manga series where he repels pain and fatigue from unconscious Luffy. He is also a "Pacifista", an experimental cyborg created by the Marine scientist Doctor Vegapunk. Perona describes Kuma as "a tyrant", and claims he committed every atrocity a pirate could commit.

Kuma is seen again at Marine Headquarters, enduring a scolding from Fleet Admiral Sengoku. He informs Sengoku that the Straw Hat's Log Pose will bring them very close to the Marine Headquarters at Mariejois. During the fight between the Straw Hat crew and the Marines on Sabaody Archipelago, Kuma makes another appearance confronting the escaping Eustass "Captain" Kidd and his crew.

However, it seems that copies of Kuma are appearing around the city as he is shown to be fighting the Strawhat crew and Urouge at the same time in two different places. These copies of Kuma also known as "Pacifista" are able to release a powerful beam blast from its mouth and hands to attack his opponents. Pirate X Drake explained that these Pacifistas appearing all over the Sabaody Archipelago has Kuma's body and adapted their laser beam powers from Admiral Kizaru. The Pacifistas seen are PX-4 the one defeated by strawhats and PX-1 The newest one.

[edit] Other characters

[edit] Gold Roger

Gold Roger (real name later revealed to be Gol D. Roger) was the Pirate King, the strongest pirate alive, and owner of the legendary treasure known as One Piece. Born in Loguetown (Roguetown in the English manga and anime), Roger was famed as the man who did what no one thought possible — he conquered the Grand Line. Even before setting out, he was the only man who truly did not fear the dangers of the Grand Line and was even excited about venturing out there. Even with warnings about ships never returning from that ocean, he did not care; in fact, he even declared that was the reason for him going. Nico Robin discovered Gold Roger was able to read and decipher poneglyphs just like her, though this was later revealed by Silvers Rayleigh to be false, saying that Roger could listen to "the voice of all things." Gold Roger had even discovered Sky island during his journey, and he significantly stated there that he had left a passage, suspected to lead to the revealing of the void century, the Rio Poneglyph.

It has been revealed by his former second in command Silvers Rayleigh that he was not captured by the World Government, but instead turned himself in. After discovering he had contracted an incurable disease he made one final voyage through the Grand Line, with Crocus in tow to help keep him alive, and finally achieved what was said to be impossible: He completed and conquered the Grand Line. After this success, Gold Roger disbanded his crew and turned himself into the World Government. Rayleigh told that with his last words he changed his dimming flame of life to a raging fire spread across the world, known as the Age of Piracy.

Only four characters of his crew have been properly introduced so far: Buggy the Clown, Red Haired Shanks, lighthouse-keeper Dr. Crocus, and "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh. His fighting style has yet to be revealed. As the man who conquered the Grand Line and became the Pirate King however, it is obvious that he was an extremely formidable fighter.

He was said to be completely fearless, and those who witnessed his execution even claim that he grinned just before his death. Many people who've met Monkey D. Luffy and knew Roger have commented that the two are very similar.

As the original and current Japanese prologue states: “ "Wealth, fame, power. The man who had acquired everything in this world, the pirate king, Gold Roger!" ”

[edit] "Red Haired" Shanks

Shanks is Monkey D. Luffy's childhood hero and a former member of Gold Roger's Crew. Despite having few appearances, he plays a major role in the series. Shanks has three scars across his left eye, inflicted in a battle with Blackbeard.[6] Shanks is missing his left arm, which he lost while saving Luffy from a Sea King. Shanks and his crew are almost always seen partying and drinking alcoholic beverages whenever they make an appearance, as the Captain's favourite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquets. Shanks' fighting abilities are formidable; he was considered a rival of Mihawk prior to losing his arm, and he regularly clashed with Whitebeard's crew while serving under Gold Roger. His monstrous spiritual intent now known to be called "Haki" is so great that junior members of the Whitebeard crew pass out by merely being in his presence.

When he was still an apprentice he and Buggy the Clown worked on the same ship, although they were big rivals and disagreed on everything.

According to Oda, Shanks is the one character that resembles himself the most out of all the One Piece characters, because of his fun-loving partying nature.[2]

  • Romance Dawn

Shanks appears in the One Piece pilot Romance Dawn, very similar to the final version of his character. The major difference is that his arm is eaten by a shark, instead of a Sea King.

[edit] Hatchan

Hatchan (はっちゃん Hacchan?), introduced as a member of Arlongs crew, called "Hachi" by most characters and called Hachiin by Camie, is an octopus Fishman. Hatchan is not very bright but a skilled swordsman, using rokutōryū ("six sword style"). He fights with Zoro during the fight between the Strawhat Crew and the Arlong Pirates. Despite having suffered a fever and severe blood loss from his unhealed wounds obtained in a duel against Mihawk, Zoro defeats Hatchan. Outside of battle, Hatchan is extremely helpful and friendly. He addressed Zoro politely when they first met, and even gave him a ride of a bay on his back. Later in the manga, in a side story told on title pages of the ongoing story, Hatchan goes on many adventures, meeting a mermaid called Camie, that ends with him opening a floating takoyaki restaurant.

Later, Hatchan is abducted by the Rosy Life Riders in an attempt to sell him into slavery. He is rescued by the Straw Hats after they met Camie. However, after becoming aware who Camie asked them to rescue, the crew objected. Only Nami deemed Hatchan to be harmless (probably due to recognizing his simple and helpful nature during her time with the Arlong pirates) and the Straw Hats agreed to help. He assists them in their battle with the Flying Fish riders and then rewards the pirates with his Takoyaki. He is currently helping the Straw Hats to reach the New World via Fishman Island, which is the only route available to them as the only other route involves traveling over the Red Line, via the Holy Land of Mariejoa, the headquarters of the World Government. This would also entail abandoning the Thousand Sunny.

Hatchan knows the former second in command of the Jolly Roger Pirates and "coating mechanic" Silvers Rayleigh on the Sabaody Archipelago and tells the Straw Hats that if they use anyone else, they won't make it to Fishman Island, implying Rayleigh is very good at this profession. He explains that, in order to reach the island, the must coat their entire ship with the soapy resin from the mangroves of the archipelago so that it can withstand the pressure of diving to Fishman Island. He is currently guiding them through the Sabaody Archipelago, and because of his newfound friendship with the Straw Hats, his old acquaintance Shakky is willing to coat the Sunny for free.

In Hatchan's Sea-Floor Stroll, it's revealed that Hatchan, along with Chu and Kuroobi, planned to open a takoyaki store when they were younger. His nickname Hachi also means eight in Japanese, a reference to him being an octopus Fishman.

Hatchan's name is quite strange. In the Japanese language, chan is a diminutive suffix, added to the end of someone's name, giving it the meaning of "cute" or "little". However, Hatchan insists that his name is Hatchan and that Hachi is just a nickname. When questioned on this, Oda replied that the chan is the same as the last name of "Chan" common in Chinese, rather than the suffix -chan.[7]

[edit] Nefertari Vivi

Nefertari Vivi (ネフェルタリ・ビビ Neferutari Bibi?) first appears as an antagonist as the main characters reach the Grand Line, as a member of Baroque Works. It is revealed that Vivi is actually the princess of Arabasta, but infiltrated Baroque Works to find out the identity of the organizations leader. Her weapons are a pair of peacock slashers.

[edit] Donquixote Doflamingo

Donquixote Doflamingo (ドンキホーテ・ドフラミンゴ Donkihōte Dofuramingo?) first appears in One Piece Chapter 234, during a meeting between the Shichibukai and high-ranking World Government officials, where his former bounty is shown to have been 340 million beli. He displays an ability to control others using movements similar to a puppeteer. Doflamingo believes that the "era of dreams", as he is calling the Great Age of Piracy is going to come to an end and is working towards starting a new era, which he said is "soon upon us". He has also been revealed as a participant in the slave trade, owning a large auction house on the Sabaody Archipelago. At that time he said to Disco that the "new era" is closing in every moment with the battle between the Royal Shichibukai and the Whitebeard pirates approaching.

[edit] Bellamy Pirates

[edit] Bellamy

Bellamy "The Hyena" (ベラミー Beramī?), named after Samuel Bellamy,[7] is the captain of the crew and has a 55 million beli bounty on his head. Bellamy's fighting prowess mainly comes from his Devil fruit power, the Bane Bane no Mi (Bane, much like the english term Boing, is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a spring bouncing), which allows him to turn body parts (or at least his legs) into springs. Using this ability, Bellamy is able to bounce off of surfaces in order to gain velocity and speed for his attacks.

[edit] Sarquiss

Sarquiss (サーキース, Sākīsu) is Bellamy's first mate, with a bounty of 38 million belli on his head. Just like his captain, he believes that a New Age is coming and laughs at anyone who mentions their dreams. [edit] Van Auger

Van Auger
Van Auger

Van Auger (ヴァン・オーガー, Van Ōgā , Van Ogre in edited English Dub), nicknamed "The Supersonic", is first seen in Jaya, shooting down seagulls from a distance so far that the Straw Hat Pirates, who were watching near the area where the seagulls fell, couldn't even see the island he was on. Van Auger appears calm and analytic even during battle.

Van Auger shares a name with real pirate John Auger.

Auger's name may also have something to do with the Latin word "auger", which is term for a fortune teller who studies the flights of birds to determine the future. This could be symbolic because we first see Auger shooting down birds and explaining that it was "fate" for the bird to be killed.

"Auge", means eye in german. This might be another reason for his name.

[edit] Doc Q

Doc Q
Doc Q

Doc Q (ドクQ Doku Kyū) is the crew's doctor. His nickname is 'Shinigami' which literally means God of Death. He first appears when the Straw Hat Pirates disembark at Mock Town, offering explosive apples to pirates. Doc Q and his horse, Stronger, are shown to be very sickly and weak.

He is described by Tsuru as once being a well respected policeman in West Blue who became a pirate after being exiled from the police force for excessive violence. He is incredibly pale, though this appears to be makeup, and is usually tap-dancing, even when walking or running.

Mohji the Lion Tamer
Mohji the Lion Tamer

Mohji (モージ, Mōji) is the first mate of Buggy's Crew. Quite pompous and at times silly, Mohji has the ability to control any animal he wishes, or so he says. He has yet to prove it in the series outside of his pet, a lion named Richie (リチー, Richī), who is more like another crew member than just a pet. Mohji usually opts to use him in battle rather than fight himself. He is, however, fast and agile, and very skilled with a whip.

[edit] Cabaji

Cabaji (カバジ, Kabaji) is the second mate in Buggy's crew as well as their primary swordsman who combines it with acrobatics to fight his enemies.

Krieg is well known for underhanded tactics; when he was first starting out as a pirate, he stole a Navy ship and under the disguise of a navy flag, approached towns without suspicion.

Don Krieg does not care for his crew and bullies them to fear him as their captain; he punishes those who fail him or show signs of weakness.

Krieg wears a gilded suit of steel armour, that is filled with hidden weapons. Krieg means "war" in German, alluding to Don Krieg's massive naval fleet and numerous personal weaponry.[7]

[edit] Gin

"Gin the Demon Man" (鬼人のギン, Kijin no Gin), known as "Ghin" in the 4kids Dub, is Don Krieg's first mate. He is saved from starvation by Sanji. When Don Krieg's forces come to take over the Baratie, Gin is ordered to kill his savior, but refuses.

[edit] Pearl

Don Krieg's second mate, also known as "Pearl the Iron Wall" and "Invincible Pearl" (鉄壁のパール, Teppeki no Pāru) is a towering man. Pearl's ensemble includes wearing two iron plates covering his front and backside, as well as two smaller plates with large pearls embedded in them on his hands for blunt attacks.

[edit] Big Pan

The final and largest member of the Groggy Monsters, Big Pan (ビッグパン, Biggu Pan) is a wotan, a half-fishman, half-giant. His fish-half is mudfish of species, therefore his skin is extremely slippery. During the Groggy Ring, he is defeated by Zoro. His weapons are two huge pans which he uses to crush his enemies.

[edit] Itomimizu

The announcer and commentator of the Davy Back Fight events, Itomimizu (イトミミズ, Itomimizu) is often seen riding a very large bird named Chuchuun to get a better view of the action. His name means tubifex worm, leading to many fans referring to him as simply 'Tubifex'.

[edit] Non-manga crewmembers

[edit] Masshikaku

MasshiKaku (マっシカク, whose name translates as 'Really Square'),is the defense against the straw Hats in the roller race. He is 20 feet tall, really fat, really slow, and an unstoppable canyon wall. Plus, every shape about him is square.

[edit] Chiqicheetah

Chiqicheetah (who has apparently eaten the Neko Neko no Mi, Model Cheetah (ネコネコの実 モデル チーター Cat Cat Fruit, Model: Cheetah), though this is never explicitly stated), is the team's unstoppable fast racer in the roller race. He has an extraordinarily sharp sense of smell (even for a Zoan). He uses rollerblades and regularly is quick enough to dodge any attack thrown on him. He is defeated when Zoro cuts down a Kiwi tree and crushes him and puts him out of bounds at the same time. Sanji, the cook, knew that trees of the class the kiwi belongs to have an exemic effect on cats.

[edit] Juubei

A squid fish man who has eight arms and is extremely rubbery, often resorting to a tangle attack. He has eight arms and gigantic top knot in the same style as Porche.

A fish man whose species is not easily determined. He has the gills and the skin color of a shark, however, his sword arms are not easily found on any shark. He also resembles a Manta in this respect. His arms have extendable swords which resemble ax-heads. They look extremely sharp, even going so far as to almost seem to puncture Luffy in his Baloon state. However, he has stated that his sword-arms are not meant to be used to cut. They are mostly there to help out every so often and to play a bluff.

[edit] Red Haired Pirates

[edit] "Red Haired" Shanks

Main article: "Red Haired" Shanks

[edit] Benn Beckman

Ben Beckman (ベン・ベックマン Ben Bekkuman?) is the first mate in Red-Haired Shanks' pirate crew, where he acts as an advisor to his captain. When first seen in the manga and anime, he wears his black hair in a ponytail, and is never seen without his rifle nearby or a cigarette in his mouth. Later in the series, his hair has turned grey and is cut short, and he has a large X-shaped scar on his left temple. He appears to be a lot less fun-loving than the other members of the crew but a lot more relaxed.

[edit] Lucky Roux

Lucky Roux (ラッキー・ルウ Rakkī Ruu?) is the fat member of the pirate crew and is always seen eating a rack of meat. Lucky is also the first person to actually kill someone in 'One Piece' and sets the stage for the series; a pirate's life is a dangerous one.
