Some Came Running, published in 1957, is James Jones's second novel. Its themes came from his life in Illinois after the second world war and gained little attention. It was made into a 1958 film, directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine, Martha Hyer and Arthur Kennedy.

It tells the story of a small-town army veteran who is torn between a local school teacher and a "less virtuous" woman he met while still in the Army.

The movie was adapted by John Patrick and Arthur Sheekman from the novel. It was directed by Vincente Minnelli. Is was filmed on location in and around Madison, Indiana.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Arthur Kennedy), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Shirley MacLaine), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Martha Hyer), Best Costume Design, Black-and-White or Color and Best Music, Song (Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn for "To Love and Be Loved").
