Son Gohan (孫 悟飯 Son Gohan?, known only as Gohan in most English adaptations), is a fictional character in the manga and anime series of Dragon Ball created by the famous mangaka Akira Toriyama. When the manga was adapted to anime, the series was split into two sub-series, called Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Gohan makes his debut appearance in the manga volume 17, or the premier episode of Dragon Ball Z. In the series, Gohan is the first son of the main protagonist of the series Son Goku, and his wife, the Ox princess named Chi Chi. Gohan was the first Saiyan/Human hybrid born in the series, and as a result, has unusual physical abilities. Gohan was named after Goku's adoptive grandfather, and is a pun on the Japanese word for cooked rice or meal.[1][2]

Gohan's appearance changes markedly throughout the series, with his beginning as a child and concluding when fully grown. Initially, he's illustrated garbed in a Chinese-resembling robe, with the four-star Dragon Ball fitted on top of his hat. Normally thereafter, he's drawn with a gi modeled after his mentor's, Piccolo (likewise having his obi recolored from red to blue in Toei's animated adaptation of the fight with Cell), or his father's (such as during his training for the Saiyans or during his fight with Majin Buu). On occasion he is portrayed in Saiyan battle armor.
Son Gohan makes his debut appearance in volume 17 of the manga, as the four-year-old son of Son Goku, the series' main protagonist. Gohan's early childhood is shown to be a pampered one, situated in a well-balanced, loving family and a nice home. During his encounter with Raditz, Gohan is depicted to have an unusual physical potential for a child. Despite this, Gohan lacks affection for fighting, as demonstrated in his dislike for hurting others. As Gohan grows and gets drawn into more battles, he becomes increasingly confident in his abilities as a warrior. Gohan's succession of his father as the world's greatest defender is featured after saving the Earth from Cell. After peace is restored, a sixteen-year-old Gohan[3] is shown to continue focusing on his studies, attending Orange Star High School in Satan City, until the conflict with Majin Buu. Following a ten year gap at the end of Dragon Ball, Gohan is depicted with a wife, Videl, and a daughter, Pan.
In the alternate timeline, Gohan is outlined to be the only surviving member of the Z Fighters. As a result, he's pictured training Bulma's half-Saiyan son, Trunks, to assist him in battling No. 17 and No. 18, who are said to have killed all of his comrades apart from Goku, who had died of a fatal heart disease soon after defeating Freeza and King Cold.[4][5] Here, Gohan has become a Super Saiyan. He wears a uniform similar to his father's, along with his own symbol on the back. His hair is cut very short and he has a scar running down the left side of his face. Due to having his training cut short by the deaths of his father and Piccolo, Future Gohan is depicted as much weaker than his past counterpart. As such, Gohan loses an arm, and is eventually killed by No. 17 & No. 18 in a fight trying to defend a city,[6] leaving Trunks to do battle alone.
Gohan is observed to have unusual abilities because of his mixed heritage. As a child, Gohan is known to have within him a seemingly limitless dormant power, which at first only revealed itself when he experienced fierce rage.[7][8] Like pure Saiyans, Gohan was born with a monkey tail. This allowed him to transform into the Oozaru, a Saiyan great ape.[9] Unlike other untrained Saiyans, Kuririn mentions how, being half-Earthling, Gohan maintains a sliver of reason while transformed.[10] Gohan's tail is removed early in Dragon Ball Z, and as a result, he loses this transformation.[10] On Namek, Saichoro helped unlock a portion of his untapped potential, unable to bring out the fullest of his tremendous latent abilities.[11] As he got older, Gohan's training allowed him conscious access to a large portion of this power, ultimately giving him access to the legendary Saiyan-state called the Super Saiyan,[12] as well as the ascended state Super Saiyan 2.[13] However, it was not until he was in his teenage years that his power was fully awakened. At the end of the series, thanks to the Rou Dai Kaioshin's help, Gohan was able to utilize all of his hidden potential at will.[14]
