Sonamukhi is a city and a municipality in Bankura District in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Sonamukhi is located at 23.3° N 87.42° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 66 metres (216 feet).

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Sonamukhi had a population of 27,348. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sonamukhi has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Sonamukhi, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Niresh Bagdi of CPI (M) won the Sonamukhi (SC) assembly seat in 2006 defeating his nearest rival Dipali Saha of AITC. In 2001, Sukhendu Khan of CPI (M) defeated Dipali Saha of AITC. In 1996 and 1991, Haradhan Bauri of CPI (M) defeated Pulakesh Saha and Sastidhar Bagdi, both of INC, in the respective years. In 1987, 1982 and 1977, Sukhendu Khan of CPI (M) defeated Kallol Saha of INC, Sasthi Bauri of INC and Kanai Saha of JNP, in the respective years. [2]

Sonamukhi is part of Durgapur (Lok Sabha constituency). [3]

In September 2005, South Eastern Railway threw open passenger services on the 41 km long Bankura-Sonamukhi broad gauge section, being the first phase of the Bankura-Damodar River Railway project. BDR project entails extension from Sonamukhi to Raina (19.8 km) and then on to Masagram, providing direct connectivity to Howrah through Eastern Railway. [4] Work is in progress (in 2007) in the Sonamukhi-Raina section. [5]
