Matano Sunset

Soroako, also spelled Sorowako, is a small mining town in the north-east of South Sulawesi province, in the centre of Sulawesi island in Indonesia. It is known to have the largest open mining in Indonesia where PT Inco, a subsidiary of the Canadian based nickel company Inco mines the nickel.

The town itself is a very beautiful place to visit. Located between the mountains verbeek, Soroako is surrounded by three natural lakes: Matano Lake, Towuti Lake and Mahalona Lake. Matano lake is the deepest lake in Indonesia and one of the lakes with purest water in the world.

Most of Soroako's people works as employees for PT Inco. They came from all over the areas in Indonesia. The rest of the civilians work there as rice planters or fishermen.

For the west of town is small mountain rock. There is a natural cave that inside hadn't been touch before, while the outer side is full of hundred skeleton that some say a long time ago used to be a rebellion force death body (PKI) and other source say that the skeleton is native cemetery (seems like in Tanah Toraja cemetery).

Truly, Soroako origin native people is in the center of the city near the lake and the rest of other area is cemetery ground. As Matano is the deepest Lake in Indonesia (about 600 metres). There is no diver that can go more depth of the lake because it width is very small.

Almost every year in december - january, In the center of Matano lake, there is a big tornado that never move. It only stay for a few minutes. This tornado diameter is about 10 metres (if look from 300-400 metres away. And there is a cloud that come down to the lake and it come up again through the tornado. Matano Lake is surrounded by ring of small mountain rock. The whether sometime can be very hard, storm and lightning. A small earthquake is often there.

The source of Matano lake is believed come from western lake that native people call it Matano village. The white head eagle is often see in the western area and sometimes red head eagle (wings are about 2 metres) is come down from the mountain to western area.
