The Southern District (Hebrew: מחוז הדרום, Mekhoz haDarom) of Israel, is one of six administrative districts, and is the largest in terms of land area as well as the most sparsely populated. It covers the greater amount of the Negev region, as well as the Arava. The population of the Southern District is 1,002,400. It is 86% Jewish and 14% Arab (mostly Muslim). The district capital is Beersheba. The district's largest city is Ashdod. The affluent cities and suburbs are Omer, Metar, and Lehavim. Sderot, Netivot, and Ofakim are lower on the socioeconomic scale.[1]
