South East London

South East London is a name commonly given to the south eastern part of London, England on the south side of the River Thames.

South east London is made up of the following London boroughs which are Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark. The total area of this group of boroughs is 322.06 km² and the total population in 2004 was 1.3 million (1'255'500).
Unlike other areas of London, south east London is poorly served by London Underground. Originally south east London was only served by the Bakerloo Line, East London Line and the Northern Line. The Bakerloo Line and the Northern Line serve the extreme north western side of the Southwark. The East London Line serves the north eastern Southwark and north western side Lewisham. With the extension of the Jubilee Line and the Docklands Light Railway in 1999 improved south east London’s access to London Underground with all of northern Southwark and Lewisham with parts of north western parts of the Greenwich. South East London is highly served by National Rail these routes are operated by Southern, Southeastern and Thameslink.
South east London is going to have some improvements in public transport, these include the Docklands Light Railway extension to Woolwich Arsenal, the East London Line extension which will link Highbury & Islington to New Cross, Crystal Palace, West Croydon and Clapham Junction. Also the Docklands Light Railway may be extended to Catford station and Catford Bridge station; the station would be between the two stations.
The oldest parts of South East London are Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich. These areas, originally in Surrey (Southwark) and Kent (Lewisham and Greenwich) officially became part of London with the creation of the County of London in 1888. Bexley and Bromley which at the time they were still in Kent did not become part of London until the creation of Greater London in 1965.
