South of Scotland Football League

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The South of Scotland Football League is an amateur association football competition based in the south of Scotland. Another earlier league of the same name briefly existed during the early days of competitive football. The current league is considered to be the weakest of Scotland's three "senior" non-leagues (the other two being the Highland Football League and the East of Scotland Football League).

The original South of Scotland Football League was created in 1892-93 and featured these clubs:

  • 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers F.C
  • Queen of the South Wanderers F.C.
  • Mauchline F.C.
  • Cronberry Eglinton F.C.
  • Lugar Boswell F.C.
  • Springbank F.C.
  • Lanemark F.C.

The competition was abandoned and no championship was awarded.

The present South of Scotland Football League was formed in 1946 and currently features these clubs:

These clubs are not usually allowed to enter the Scottish Cup, although some, such as Dalbeattie Star, Threave Rovers and St. Cuthbert Wanderers, meet the ground standards required for this competition or did so in the recent past.

The Challenge Cup is the league's main knockout competition and it has been played since 1891. Some Scottish Football League clubs also enter.
