The company was formerly owned and operated by Southend Council and was known as Southend Corporation Transport or Southend Transport.

Arriva took over control of the Southend Transport in August 1998 and renamed it Arriva Serving Southend (although the 'Serving Southend' caption has been phased out now).

Following the takeover;

  • the old garage was demolished and the land now belongs to Curry's and Right Price Tiles shops.
  • the garage was moved to Short Street.
  • the X1 service was changed to route number 721 and finally withdrawn with control taken over by Stephensons of Essex who returned the route to its original X1 numbering.

A restructuring in 2002 saw overall control of Arriva Colchester, Arriva Southend and Arriva operations in the Grays area pass to Arriva Southern Counties.
