Southern Connecticut State University, or SCSU, one of four state universities in Connecticut, is located in New Haven, Connecticut. It was founded in 1893, it is the third-oldest campus in the Connecticut State University system. Southern lies midway between New York City and Boston.

Southern serves as a center for culture and education for the entire region. The campus clinics provide diagnosis and treatment of speech, hearing, and reading problems, and learning disabilities. In the fine arts, Southern plays host to workshops in literature and dance, art exhibits, performances by professional artists as well as student artists, and institutes on a wide range of topics.

In keeping with its origins as a teachers college, Southern Connecticut State remains a leading center for teacher education in New England. It produces more teachers, principals, and school superintendents than any other institution in Connecticut. The university recently received approval for its first doctoral program, to be administered by the Department of Educational Leadership in the School of Education. Students who complete this program will received the degree of Doctor of Education, or Ed.D.

Southern has one campus in New Haven that borders parts of Hamden, Connecticut. The campus is bisected by Fitch Street, which separates the academic side of campus from the residential side.

Its sports teams are nicknamed The Fighting Owls.

Abie Grossfeld, its long-time gymnastics coach, former Olympian, is head gymnastics coach at Southern Connecticut State University, and helped the program become one of the best in the country. He coached four Nissen Award winners (akin to football’s Heisman Trophy), three NCAA Div. II championship teams, 10 Consecutive Eastern Collegiate Conference (EIGL) team championships (1975-’84), and 148 gymnasts who achieved All American status. Among those he coached were Peter Kormann, first U.S. Olympic individual gymnastics medalist since 1932; John Crosby, two World Cup individual gold medals; and three Pan American individual gold medal winners (1971 & ’75).

The college radio station, WSIN, 1590 AM, broadcasts to Connecticut. It also streams its broadcasts on the web. WSIN stands for Southern Independent Network.

The Southern News is a student-run newspaper, and subsidized by student fees and advertising income.

The Southern News is published weekly in tabloid format.
