SpiceJet is a low-cost airline based in New Delhi, India. It began service in May 2005. It was voted as the best low-cost airline in South Asia and Central Asia region by Skytrax in 2007.^[1]

SpiceJet was earlier known as Royal Airways, a reincarnation of ModiLuft. SpiceJet marked its entry in service with Rs. 99 fares for the first 99 days. There were 9000 seats available at this rate. It followed it up with a Rs. 999 promotional scheme on select routes. Their marketing theme "offering low 'everyday spicy fares' and great guest services to price conscious travelers". Their aim is to compete with the Indian Railways passengers travelling in AC coaches. The Executive Chairman of the company is Mr. Siddhanta Sharma.

The airline has no frequent flyer programme.

One of the other cost-cutting feature of Spicejet is to allow only 20 kg of luggage with each passenger. No extra allowance is given to international passengers. In addition it allows to carry one small hand bag in addition to small personal items; such as a ladies purse/hand bag, an overcoat wrap or blanket, an umbrella/a walking stick, a reasonable amount of reading material, a small camera or binoculars, Infant's food for Guests traveling with Infant, or laptop computer.

As of November 2007 the SpiceJet fleet includes:

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft are in single class configuration with 189 seats and 212 seats on the Boeing 737-900ER

In 2005, the airline placed a firm order for 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft (with 10 options), for domestic routes in India. The first delivery took place on February 7, 2006 and the aircraft was the airline's first Boeing 737-800 featuring blended winglets.^[3]

On February 20, 2006 the airline announced it will convert its 10 options into firm orders for 5 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft and 5 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to be delivered from 2007-2009, and acquired an additional 10 options for either the Boeing 737-800 or Boeing 737-900ER or combinations thereof. The 10 additional options were converted into orders for 5 Boeing 737-800s and 5 Boeing 737-900ERs in August 2006.

Aircraft are also seasonally leased from Dutch Low Cost Carrier, Transavia.com

Spicejet's primary livery is white, with red on the tail end. The word "Spicejet" appears on the front of the aircraft. The company logo with dots in centrifugal pattern is also present in the tail end. The dots increase in size. The winglets are red in color.
