The township Spielberg, with a population of about 5000 inhabitants, is located north of the Mur in the east of the Aichfeld, between the cities Zeltweg and Knittelfeld. The municipal area of Knittelfeld is grown together with a part of the township. Since 1986 Spielberg is a Marktgemeinde. Within the district you can find both municipal and countrified mintages.

The township is composed of 9 Katastralgemeinden. Pausendorf with 1500 habitants is the major Katastralgemeinde. The Katastralgemeinde Spielberg whereas is just a little part of the township but gives the whole municipality its name.

The dominating position of the SPÖ in the township consists foremost since 1960, when the countrified township became a municipal municipality mostly because a lot of industry firms above all the Austria Antriebstechnik AG (ATB) lowered in the township.

Spielberg is the place where the A1-Ring (formerly known as Österreichring) is located. From 1970 until 1987 and from 1997 until 2003 the Grand Prix of Austria took place there.
