Spinaway Stakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Spinaway Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses open to two-year-old fillies. A Grade I event, it offers a purse of $250,000 and is contested each summer at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. At a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt, the Spinaway is a major prep to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

In its 115th running in 2006, the Spinaway has been run at different distances at different tracks, but has always been an important race for up-and-coming fillies.

Ruffian won this race in 1974, La Prevoyante in 1972, Numbered Account in 1971, Affectionately in 1962, Cicada in 1961, Top Flight in 1931, Maskette in 1908, and Miss Woodford in 1882.

Winners of the Spinaway since the beginning of the new century are:

  • 2006 - Appealing Zophie
  • 2005 - Adieu
  • 2004 - Sense of Style
  • 2003 - Ashado
  • 2002 - Awesome Humor
  • 2001 - Cashier's Dream
