USS St. Mary's

Four ships in the United States Navy have been named USS St. Mary's. The first St. Mary's was named for the community in Georgia. The second and fourth ships of that name were named for the county in Maryland. The third St. Mary's retained her former name.

  • The first St. Mary's was a galley built in 1798. She served in the Quasi-War with France and was transferred to the Revenue Cutter Service late in 1801.
  • The second St. Mary's was a sloop of war built in 1844. She served until 1875. When she was transferred to the Public Marine School at New York and served as a schoolship until 1908.
  • The third St. Mary's (SP-1457) was a motor boat built in 1912 and acquired by the Navy in 1917. In November 1918, she was returned to the Maryland Conservation Commission at Wynne, Maryland.
  • The fourth St. Mary's (APA-126) was commissioned in 1944 and served as an attack transport during World War II. In February 1946, she was decommissioned and returned to the Maritime Commission.

Other ships:

  • St. Mary's, a side-wheeled steamer, was acquired by the Navy and renamed Hatteras in 1861.
  • CSS St. Mary was captured in 1863 by Union forces; temporarily called Yazoo, she was commissioned as Alexandria in December 1863.
