Stephen Armstrong (born July 23, 1976 in Birkenhead, England) is an English/South African (dual citizenship) [1] soccer forward/midfielder, who currently plays for the Charleston Battery in the USL First Division.

Born in England and raised in Cape Town, South Africa after the age of 4, Armstrong came to the US to attend Butler University. In four seasons (1996-99) with the Bulldogs, he made All-American, finished as the school's third all-time leading scorer (43 goals, 102 points) and ranked in the Horizon League's all-time top 10 for both goals and points. [2] Starting in 1998, Armstrong also played for the Mid-Michigan Bucks in the USL Premier Development League. [3]

Armstrong played in Sweden and in the English Championship Division (at Watford F.C.) [4] before being selected 13th overall in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. Armstrong was traded to Kansas City (for Brandon Prideaux) in 2002, and spent two years with the Wizards, appearing in regular season and playoff games each year. Armstrong missed the 2004 Major League Soccer season while recovering from ACL surgery on his right knee [5], then joined the Columbus Crew in 2005. He signed with Charleston at the start of the 2006 season.
