Stephen Bywater, (born June 7, 1981 in Manchester), is an English football player who plays as a goalkeeper for Derby County. He joined The Rams on a permanent deal from West Ham United on August 27, 2006 for a fee of around £225,000 after a two-week loan spell at Pride Park.

Bywater had a disastrous debut for The Hammers after he let in 4 goals in the Premiership game against Bradford City but it didn't matter because they won the match 5-4 at Upton Park in February 2000.

Bywater was a regular starter in the 2004/5 season for West Ham, in which the side were promoted to the Premiership. He appeared in the play-off final at the Millennium Stadium that year, coming on as a substitute for the injured Jimmy Walker in the 1-0 victory over Preston North End.

He has previously played for Rochdale, where he started his career, West Ham United and the England U-21 side. He has had previous loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Hull City and Coventry City.

Bywater wears the number 43 shirt at Derby as a tribute to his mentor and former goalkeeping coach Les Sealey, who died at the age of 43.
