Steve Augeri

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve Augeri (born January 30, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American rock singer.

Journey hired Steve Augeri in 1998 to replace Steve Perry, after Perry left the band following their brief mid-1990s reunion due to touring conflicts and Perry's health issues. Reportedly, he was hired because his singing voice bore a haunting resemblance to Perry's.

Augeri and Perry have similar vocal styles, and are sometimes confused for that (plus their similar physique and same first name). Augeri's debut with the band was on the single "Remember Me," from the Armageddon movie soundtrack. He is listed on the albums Arrival, Red 13 and Generations.

Prior to Journey, Augeri was the lead vocalist in Tall Stories and Tyketto, before retiring from music in the mid-1990's after Tall Stories ran out of momentum. To make ends meet, Augeri was working at The Gap, when Journey guitarist Neal Schon came into contact with a demo tape of Augeri's. The timing was right, and Augeri got the call.

After ongoing voice problems during the 2006 tour, it was announced after a recent show on July 4th [1] that Augeri was to be replaced on tour by Jeff Scott Soto, who is also a member of the Neal Schon side project Soul Sirkus. Augeri was diagnosed as suffering from a throat infection and was advised to rest his vocal cords while recovering. On December 19, 2006 a statement was released on the band's official website [2] that Jeff Scott Soto had been officially announced as the new lead singer of Journey.
