Steven Caldwell (born September 12, 1980 in Stirling, Scotland) is a Scottish footballer. He currently plays for Championship side Burnley F.C..He was released by his first club Newcastle United in 2004, having previously been loaned out, and joined local rivals Sunderland A.F.C.. He is a central defender.

Caldwell is known for his whole hearted approach to the game and the solid partnership formed with Gary Breen. On April 23, 2005, he scored Sunderland's winning goal against Leicester City, which meant his team were promoted back to the Premiership.

He is a Scotland international, although he is behind his younger brother, Gary of Celtic (Stephen Caldwell was a Celtic supporter in his youth), in the international pecking order. As of January 2006 he had attained 8 caps, as against Gary's 17.

In an interview alongside his brother Gary in Newcastle United fanzine "True Faith" in 2003, Steven Caldwell was asked whether if no longer wanted at Newcastle, he would ever consider joining arch-rivals Sunderland, and answered with a resounding no, saying he valued the support Newcastle fans had given him and said he whilst he may have to leave Newcastle at some point,he would never join Sunderland. As a result of this, his 2004 transfer to rivals Sunderland was seen as a major betrayal, and he has since been ridiculed and criticised by Newcastle fans.

An injury-plagued season saw Caldwell fall out of favour at Sunderland and the centre half rarely featured in Roy Keane's first team when fit. He was linked with a move away from the club - with Sunderland accepting bids from Championship rivals Burnley and Coventry City. Caldwell signed for Burnley for £400,000 with just 9 minutes of the transfer window remaining. He was shortly thereafter named club captain and endeared himself to the team's fans with his uncompromising tackling and commitment.
