In its current incarnation, Sonic stir-fry is hosted by:

  • Michael Byrnes
  • Matt Wright
  • Rob Mesaros
  • Ben Fuller

SSF first aired at midnight 11 July 1997 and followed Whiplash, the 2GLF metal program hosted by Matt Wright.

A time slot was created by the 2GLF station manager after receiving calls once a day for a month from the program's creator, Rachel Slat. He was finally convinced that Rachel, her college buddy Michael Byrnes (with community radio experience) and school friend Kelly (with freelance music journalism experience) were suitable for the job.

After four months, they moved to Monday nights but eventually found their home on Fridays from 10 to midnight after Matt decided to pull the plug on the Whiplash program.

Matt, none-the-less, continued to hang around staying on air with SSF and they all became friends. Thomas Rock, who helmed the hip hop show HardCore Classic after SSF also joined in and they all became friends (with Kelly and Tom becoming partners).

Meanwhile, Rob Mesaros, another of Michael's friends, was hosting a Sunday morning sports program called The Power and the Passion and would also fill in for Whiplash and Sonic stir-fry from time to time.

The core SSF line-up has most recently included Ben Fuller.

Kelly and Tom's move to Brisbane as well as Rachel's move to the city ended their permanent gig on SSF, but they continue to appear from time to time as special guests.

Michael: Incontrovertibly the greatest. Tommy Tycho is an ignorant fool.
Matt: The greatest, bar none. We still forgive Faul for deceiving us for all these years.
Ben: The Beatles cartoon changed the course of my life and was responsible for the Beatles haircut that I sported until the end of school. I've since changed the haircut and thus managed to meet gorgeous girls and marry one!
Rob: Ringo was the brains and the heart of the band. A true great.

Michael: An homage to Cat Power's disastrous 2003 Metro concert – at least she had her drunkenness as an excuse.
Matt: Always a possibility, never a certainty, but the train usually starts wobbling around 10:30pm.
Ben: The excitement of live radio on the edge or just plain unorganised? You be the judge.
Rob: Unwanted. Unloved. Inevitable.

Michael: A musical genius unfairly maligned by the ignorant, ill-informed, and insensitive. Criticism usually results from envy.
Matt: The guy is brilliant for sure, but it's easy and fun to rile Michael up with this one.
Ben: Two strings short of a Muppet. If he's a genius then I'm a savoy truffle!

Michael: Brilliant, beautiful, enigmatic, mysterious, exotic, extraordinary and British. What more could you want? She even has very clean clothes.
Matt: Needs to get to the gym and stop worrying about washing machines!
Ben: Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid.

Michael: Brian and Kate don't need to wear make up to be remembered.
Matt: I wanted the best, I got the best. The hottest band in the world.
Ben: Are you kidding, Michael? Kate Bush wore so much makeup that she looked like a nutrimetics consultant.

Michael: Didn’t Kayne West sing about women like this? McCartney lost his dignity 20 years after his genius went missing.
Matt: I don’t think I’d take her for a drag on the beach.
Ben: Up-to-the-minute reporting of a marriage on its last leg.
Rob: Still swimming in circles. Much like the show.

Michael: Exhibited on a regular basis, by a certain Black and White Minstrel loving Al Jolson fan.
Matt: No, I don’t know anything about that.
Ben: (In the voice of Manuel from Fawlty Towers) Khe? Khe? I no understand…
