StuffIt Expander is a freeware, closed source data compression software utility developed by Allume Systems (formerly Aladdin Systems) It runs in Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux/UNIX. It does not compress files. As of January 2007, the latest Macintosh version is 11.0.2, which requires Mac OS X v10.3, but has several features/fixes for 10.4 users. Mac OS X v10.2 users should use version 8.0.2 (included in StuffIt Standard). The latest version for Mac OS Classic is 7.0.3.

The latest stand-alone version for Windows is 7.0. It is distributed with StuffIt v7.0.x for this platform. From version 7.5.x on, the Expander capabilities are actually performed by the StuffIt Standard Edition, that allows decompression even after the end of the trial period. To start StuffIt in Expander mode the following command line switches are used: -expand -uiexpander [1]. Note that the registration reminder dialog box is not shown in this case.

There is also a command line DOS application UNSTUFF v1.1 that allows decompression of .sit files.

Expander decompresses files in the following formats:

  • A to B (.btoa)
  • AppleLink Package (.pkg)
  • AppleSingle (.as)
  • Arc (.arc)
  • BinHex (.hqx), all versions
  • bzip (.bzip, .bz, .bz2, .tbz)
