Subhash graduated in commerce from Rohtak, Haryana and moved to Pune, Maharashtra to learn cinema at the Film and Television Institute of India. After attaining a diploma, he started working in the Indian film industry in 1970.

His directorial break was the film Kalicharan (1976) which he obtained through a recommendation by Shatrughan Sinha, which was one of the biggest hits of its time. As of 2005, he has written and directed 15 movies out of which 13 were highly successful. In 1982, he formed a company - Mukta Arts Private Limited which, in 2000, became a public company. Subhash Ghai is its chairman and managing director.

Pardes (1997) (Abroad) and Taal (1999) (The Beat) were released internationally and featured in the Top 20 movies in USA for several weeks.

His last two movies that he directed, Yaadein (2001) and Kisna (2005) were relative box office failures. It has been said he took the 'failure' of Kisna personally.

Subhash Ghai has a tendency to overpublicize his films and this combined with the success of most of his films has hampered the box office success of his latest movies. Ghai himself admitted that he created too much anticipation.

Still, actors Hritikh Roshan and Kareena Kapoor said that working on Yaadein was a gratifying experience and that Ghai is an immensely talented director.

Subhash Ghai generally appears in one shot of every movie he makes. It could be just a line in the middle of a song, but is typically very short and irrelevant to the movie.

Each of his 1990s films feature one Rajasthani styled fast paced song number near the climax off the film.

One of the most accomplished directors in the Hindi film world, with his speacialty being big , epic films.

In 2006 he started his own film institute "Whistling Woods International" in Film City Bombay. The institute trains studensts in various aspecsts of film making - production, direction, cinematography, acting etc.

Ghai is known as a showman and is quite well known for his womanizing ways.
