HM Sultan Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I was born on October 24, 1954 at the Royal Palace in Darul Jambangan, Royal Maimbung, Sulu, Philippines. During his formative years, the Sultan (then Prince Muhammad Fuad Abdualla Kiram) attended elementary school in Royal Maimbung at the Sultan Jamalul Kiram II Elementary School. He completed his elementary education in 1966 then went on to attend high school in Jolo, Sulu graduating in 1971. The Sultan was the last son born to HM Sultan Muhammad Esmail E. Kiram I (r.1947-1973) the 33rd reigning Sultan of Sulu and Sabah, and his wife HM Pangyan Hadja Nananag Abdulla Kiram, both of whom are now deceased.
After completing his high school education, the Prince pursued a degree in political science in Manila, Philippines graduating in 1975. Following the completion of his studies, the Prince worked for the Philippine Department of National Defense in the Office of Civil Defense. He served as a Planning Officer from 1975 to 1996.
HM Sultan Muhammad Fuad is father to six children:

- HRH Prince Al-Mezzheer A. Kiram - Crown Prince of Sulu, Prince of Jolo
- HRH Prince Fuad A. Kiram - Prince of Sandakan
- HRH Prince Mohammad Ismail A. Kiram - Prince of Maimbung
- HRH Princess Leila Mae Kiram
- HRH Princess Maryam Jaya Kiram
The Sultan is the youngest brother and successor of the 34th Sultan of Sulu and Sabah, HM Sultan Mahakuttah Abdulla Kiram (r.1974-1986) who succeeded their father, the 33rd Sultan of Sulu and Sabah, as ruling sovereign. Sultan Muhammad Fuad's other siblings are HRH Prince Iskander Abdulla Kiram, HRH Princess Patnuharda Abdulla Kiram-Juaini, HRH Prince Pahlivi Abdulla Kiram, and HRH Princess Parmaisuli Abdulla Kiram-Guerzon. Of the Sultan's five siblings, only HRH Princess Patnuharda and HRH Princess Parmaisuli are currently living.
On June 3, 2006, having fulfilled the requirements set down by the Law of Succession of the Royal House of Sulu and Sabah, the Sultan was officially crowned by the Royal Datus and Sharifs as the 35th reigning sultan, HM Sultan Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I, the Sultan of Sulu and Sabah.
The Sultan's other official title is Sri Paduka Maulana Al-Sultan Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I Bin Al-Marhum Al-Sultan Muhammad Esmail E. Kiram I. He is also the Sovereign of the Royal Order of Hashem of Sabah (SROHS), Sovereign of the Royal Order of Sulu (SROS), Sovereign of the Royal Order of Sulu and Sabah (SRSS), Sovereign of the Royal Order of Kiram (SRK) and Sovereign of the Royal Order of Mindanao (SRM).
HM Sultan Muhammad Fuad Abdulla Kiram I is currently undergoing efforts to settle the disputed ownership of Sabah (Northern Borneo) with the government of Malaysia. For more information, please see Sabah Debate article in Wikipedia or refer to [1]
In 2006, HM Sultan Muhammad Fuad was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Diplomacy (DDipl), C Dipl, FCDA (Dist), and in Peace Building by the Academy of Chartererd Diplomacy Europe, London, England due to his efforts to resolve the Sabah issue through peaceful diplomacy.
The Sultan's major interests are the art and science of heraldry, military history, classical music, art and culture, martial arts, and political science.
