Sunderland Central will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, the Boundary Commission for England has created this new seat of Sunderland Central.

The constituency is formed from the following electoral wards:

  • Barnes, Fulwell, Hendon, Millfield, Pallion, Ryhope, St Michael’s, St Peter’s and Southwick

As a consequence of the creation of this seat, the other Sunderland constituencies have been formed as Houghton and Sunderland South and Washington and Sunderland West. Sunderland North and Sunderland South have been abolished.

This new constituency of Sunderland Central will be fought for the first time at the UK general election which must be held before June 2010.

Sunderland central will be a marginal seat. The council wards that make up Sunderland central currently hold 12 Conservative councillors, 12 Labour coucillors, one independent and 1 Liberal Democrat. Looking at the council election results for these wards combined would give the Conservatives a majority in the constituency and thus return the first Conservative MP for Sunderland since 1964. However, this is unlikely as Labour party supporters are more likely to vote in a general election than local elections.
