Sunderland South is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. It is a strong Labour seat and has been represented by Chris Mullin since 1987. The constituency is well known for trying to be the first seat to report its results, doing so in each of the four general election in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2005.

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, Sunderland South is to be merged with elements of the existing Houghton and Washington East seat to create a new constituency called Houghton and Sunderland South

There is also the creation of a new Sunderland Central seat.
