Tegernsee is a spa town in Bavaria, Germany, which takes its name from the lake on which it stands.

It lies within the Miesbach district about 50km south of Munich and within the Bavarian Alps. Tyrol and Austria are about 20km away. Because of the beauty of its Alpine landscape and rich history, the town of Tegernsee and the area around the lake is a major tourist attraction with various spa and sport facilities for both summer and winter. As of the 2004 census Tegernsee town has a population of 5,000, the whole Tegernsee lake valley a population of 32,000.

Other towns on Lake Tegernsee are Kreuth, Bad Wiessee, Gmund am Tegernsee and Rottach-Egern.

Tegernsee Abbey was founded in 746 by Benedictine monks and had a substantial influence on development of Southern Bavaria. In 1803 the monastery was secularised and became the Summer Residence of the Bavarian Royal Family, the Wittelsbachs, which brought court life and visitors to the lake.
