Temperence Hill

Temperence Hill (March 1977 - June 2003): Eclipse Award Champion 3 year old colt of 1980. Career wins include the 1980 Belmont Stakes (G1), Travers Stakes(G1), Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), Suburban Handicap (G1), and the inaugural Super Derby (G1). He retired in 1981 with career earnings of $1,567,650.

Bred in Kentucky by Dr. Albert F. Polk Jr.'s Oriskany Farm, Temperence Hill was sired by Stop the Music and out of the Etonian mare Sister Shannon. Consigned to the 1978 Keeneland September yearling sale, Temperence Hill was purchased and raced by Arkansas lumberman John Ed Anthony's Loblolly Stable and trained throughout his career by Joseph B. Cantey.

After showing strong potential thoroughout the spring of 1980, with wins in Kentucky Derby prep races; Rebel Handicap and Arkansas Derby (G2), Temperence Hill's breakthorugh performance came in the 1980 Belmont Stakes where he defeated Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk and Preakness Stakes winner Codex at odds of 53-1. He went on to win several additional Grade I stakes listed above and was voted Champion three year old of 1980.

Upon his retirement from racing in 1981 Temperence Hill was syndicated and stood for several years at Gainsway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. In 16 seasons of breeding in North America, Temperence Hill sired 3 foreign champions, 39 stakes winners, and 433 winners from 602 starters with total earnings of $26,538,905. Late in his stud career he was sold to Thailand general and thouroughbred owner Charlie Pekaman, at whose farm he is buried.
