Tenjho Tenge (天上天下 Tenjō Tenge?, lit. "Heaven and Earth") is a seinen anime and manga series created by Oh! great (大暮 維人 Ōgure Ito?). The title is said to be from the saying of the Buddha when he was born: "I, alone, am honored on Heaven and Earth." (天上 天下 唯我 独尊 Tenjō Tenge Yuiga Dokuson?). [1]

The manga is currently running in Shueisha's Ultra Jump in Japan. The manga is being officially published in North America by DC Comics in the CMX label. The CMX English version is edited to reduce the sexuality and market it with a T (Teen - 13 Yrs and older) rating, a controversial move in the eyes of many North American fans, but is now marketed with an OT (Older Teen - 16 Yrs and older) and contains far less editing than before. The editing was done with Oh! great's approval [5]. In the Philippines, there were no scenes removed but in scenes that the breasts are almost exposed, they are pixelated or blurred because it is shown in an early timeslot; there is also a parental guidance warning preceding each airing. The anime, directed by Toshifumi Kawase and produced by Avex Mode and TV Asahi, was broadcast on TV Asahi in Japan from April 1 to September 16, 2004 and it is licensed Geneon Entertainment.

There is also a 2-episode OVA named Tenjho Tenge ULTIMATE FIGHT, also licensed by Geneon.

For most of their lives, Souichiro Nagi and Bob Makihara have been able to take over a school by fighting and beating everyone. Their first day at Todou Academy started as any other new school, they start taking it over by beating up everyone that got in their way. Not until Maya Natsume and Masataka Takayanagi showed up did they realize that this was no ordinary school. This was a school where people have powerful techniques and uncanny skill. They also learned that the ruling Enforcement Group, led by Mitsuomi Takayanagi, is not to be taken lightly and is not tolerant of their disturbance. In order to get back at the "Enforcers," Souichiro and Bob join the Juuken Club which is the only surviving group that opposes them. The more the two groups interact, the more they begin to realize they are part of a conflict they know little about.

The plot deepens as they find out about the history of Maya and Aya Natsume's older brother Shin Natsume, how his Dragon Eye drove him insane and caused him to kill his mother and father and eventually he was killed by Mitsuomi. (Actually, Shin killed himself with the help of Miss Kuzunoha.)

The Tenjho Tenge manga was first serialized by the Japanese monthly manga magazine Ultra Jump, by the publisher Shueisha in 1997. Its serialization was Oh! Great's first crossover mainstream comic from writing and illustrating Hentai comics.[6] The chapters are compiled into five chapter bound volumes by Shueisha about two times a year. Tenjho Tenge has been licensed for North American publication by CMX, which is a an imprint of DC Comics. CMX version of the manga is edited in order for it to be rated as Teen "...to give it the widest possible distribution in the United States". [7] According to CMX, these changes were made in conjunction with Shueisha and the Tenjho Tenge creator, Oh! Great, who examines each of the CMX's volumes and their changes.[7][8] The manga is popular both in Japan and in North America and it's volumes are regularly the top twenty best selling manga according to Tohan and Diamond Comic Distributors. [9] [10] [11] [12]

Tenjho Tenge anime was directed by Toshifumi Kawase, animated by Madhouse Studios, and produced by TV Asahi and Avex Inc.. The twenty-four episodes were originally aired weekly on TV Asahi in Japan on Thursdays from April 1, 2004 to September 16, 2004. These episodes where made into eight volume DVD box sets. Two additional episodes were broadcast by TV Asahi in Japan on March 16, 2005 and released in the form of a OVA named "Tenjho Tenge: Ultimate Fight". The anime follows closely to its source material up to the manga's eighth volume with the exception of the sexual content which was toned down. The anime has been dubbed in to English, French, German and the Tagalog language. The anime series has been licensed for North America by Geneon. They have released all DVD volumes except the OVA and the DVD special named "Tenjho Tenge: The Past Chapter", which is all the flashbacks from the second half of the TV series condensed into the size of four episodes.

The anime's music, including the background music and theme songs, were composed and performed by various artist, such as m.c.A·T and Aiko Kayo whom provided the opening and closing themes songs of the anime. In 2005, Avex record label released a Tenjho Tenge soundtrack, a single, and two character collection albums.

The Phoenix's right wing has white feathers, and the left wing has red feathers. The white feathers represent the six White Feather families, each specializing in a particular field of conventional warfare. The red feathers represent the Red Feather families, the members of which have the potential to access unique ki-based abilities, such as the Dragon's Fist. All together, the organization is composed of 6 styles and 36 groups all together, these are called the 12 families. Other feathers represent the other branch and minor families that are also part of this alliance, making 36 feathers. The Rising Phoenix shows how the Takayanagi (高柳 ?) family, depicted as the phoenix, is supported by the other families, the feathers.
