Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (天使なんかじゃない? lit. I'm Not an Angel) is a shōjo and romance manga created by Ai Yazawa. It was serialized in Ribon and later in eight volumes of graphic novels. This series should not be confused with another similarly titled manga, Tenshi Ja Nai.

Midori Saejima (冴島翠 Saejima Midori) - This is the main character in the story. She is an only child but is always happy, bright and has many friends.

Akira Sudō (須藤晃 Sudō Akira) - This is the other main character in the story. He is the guy who Midori falls in love with. At the beginning, he seems like a guy that is hard to understand. His sister Hiroko likes Midori very much.

Ken Nakagawa (須藤晃 Nakagawa Ken) - He is a friend from Midori's previous school. We are introduced to him in volume 3 when Midori meets up with some of her old friends on her birthday. He is a musician which perhaps explains his lack of appearance up to this point. Later on, Midori attends one of his shows. He is also often mentioned in another of Yazawa's works called Gokinjo Monogatari as the character Tsutomu in that manga bears an uncanny resembalence to him.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

This manga takes place at Hijiri Gakuen, a school that doesn't have much history. It has very interesting teachers and is willing to take in new ideas by their students. It all begins when Akira is voted president and Midori is voted vice president in the student council. Midori falls in love with Akira at first sight.

However at the beginning of the story, Akira is in love with Hiroko, Midori's art teacher, who is also the fiancé of Akira's tutor. Midori, however, does not know about this and gets hurt later on in the story.

Akira does not feel very bad when Midori throws herself at him, so they go on dates, and to the people around them, it seems like they are going out. Midori loves Akira, Akira likes Midori back.

However, Akira still isn't over Hiroko, and Midori notices this. There is an appearance of a guy named Ken-chan, who has liked Midori for the past several years.

The remainder of the story concerns itself with the question of whether or not Midori and Akira will fall in love with each other.
