Tevaram
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tevaram is a body of ancient religious hymns composed by the thousands in the popular Tamil language by Saiva, Nayanars and Vaishnava saints to spread their faith among common people. The hymns were set to music and were profoundly influencal in reviving Tamil music and in the growth of Carnatic music. It fact, the Tevaram hymns may be the basis of the central developments in Karnatic music at the time of the Vijayanagara Empire between the 14th and the 16th centeries. They continue to be sung in temples today as part of the worship.[1] [2]
In the Tamil language, Te means God, so the Varam sung in praise of Te, became known as Tevaram.[3]
