The Butterfly Effect (released in 1999) is the fourth full-length album by the Portuguese band Moonspell, inspired by chaos theory. The harsh and cold music of the album, composed primarily by the band's guitarist, Pedro Paixão, differs greatly from previous Moonspell releases. The album is more aggressive than Sin/Pecado, especially vocally. The use of samples and synthetizers, toned down guitars and the absence of guitar solos led to criticisms by many fans and critics.
