The Casino Murder Case (1934) exemplifies S. S. Van Dine's storytelling skill. In this book, Philo Vance's murder investigation takes place in a private casino on New York's upper west side, and its a complex tale that manages to keep the reader's interest. The description of the family life of a rich albeit unorthodox family is also well thought out. The weakness stands in the solution, which is very implausible. Van Dine manages to please with his numerous, carefully thought through details. So while not a classic of the puzzle plot, it is an atmospheric and fun-to-read book.
