The Dance is a live performance by the band Fleetwood Mac, released on CD and VHS in 1997, and later on DVD. It hailed the return (and also final collaboration) of the band's most successful line-up (Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie), which had not released an album together since 1987's Tango in the Night. 20 years on from their monumental bestselling album "Rumours", "The Dance" renewed public interest in the band, which had by that time had fallen into relative obscurity. It was also the first Fleetwood Mac release to top the US album charts since 1982's "Mirage". This line-up (without Christine McVie) would later go on to record the 2003 studio album "Say You Will". The concert was recorded on a soundstage in Burbank, CA, and features the University of Southern California Marching Band who perform on the tracks "Tusk" (which they had also played on the original recording of) and "Don't Stop". Although predominantly a live greatest hits package, "The Dance" also features new material written by each of the primary songwriting members of the band (two from Buckingham) as well as popular album tracks. A notable and surprising inclusion is the Stevie Nicks composition "Silver Springs", a largely forgotten track which was recorded for (but omitted from) the band's "Rumours" album in 1977, and was used as a B-side instead. In the early 1990's, the track was cited as the cause of a rift between Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, as she had wanted to use it for her own Best Of collection "TimeSpace". Fleetwood had apparently refused her request as he wanted to include it as a rarity on the 1992 Fleetwood Mac box set "25 years - The Chain". Following this disagreement, Nicks left the band. Her return for "The Dance" has given "Silver Springs" considerable prominence within the Fleetwood Mac catalogue, and the track has now become a regular live favourite.

Debuting at #1 in the Billboard 200, The Dance became the 5th best-selling live album of all time in the United States, with over 5 million copies sold there.
