The Flintstone Kids

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flintstone Kids is a children's animated television show, a spin-off of The Flintstones which followed the adventures of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty as 10-year-olds with pet Dino. It aired from 1986 to 1988 on ABC, and was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It only starred characters which were seen in the original TV series, and the child personas of the known characters were particularly like their adult ones.

There was also a comic book series from Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel Comics).

In addition to the main story featuring the young Flintstone kids, the series also featured three other segments [1]:

  • Captain Caveman and Son (The exploits of the word's first superhero and his offspring, Cavey Jr.)
  • Dino's Dilemmas (The perils of prehistoric dogs.)
  • Flintstone Funnies (A fantasy/adventure segment in which Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty let their imaginations run wild.)

  • According to information known from the original series, The Flintstone Kids would never have been possible. It is known from several episodes in the original series (and the movie The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas) that not all the characters knew each other at this age. Fred and Barney would not meet Wilma and Betty until they were at least 18 years old and in or just graduated from college. They also did not know Dino at this age, as they adopt him in the episode "The Snorkasaurus Hunter" in the first season of the original series. Also, in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, the group is awarded an egg as a carnival prize, which hatches into Dino whom Fred adopts as his pet.
  • In an episode of The Flintstones, it is revealed that Nate Slate (Fred's boss) is Barney's uncle (through Nate's sister). But in this series, he and Barney appear to be the same age. Unless Nate's sister is 15-20 years older than Nate is, this doesn't make sense.
  • From this series forward, Wilma's last name is said to be Slaghoople. Prior to this, Wilma's (maiden) last name was Pebble.
  • Rocky Ratrock's real first name is said to be Francis in Season 1, but in the Season 2 episode "Rocky's Rocky Road", Rocky's mother says his first name is Rockford.

  • While the series isn't canon, one of the characters (Philo Quartz) makes an appearance in A Flintstones Christmas Carol as a security guard. Again, it's more a tribute than an attempt to make The Flintstone Kids canon.
  • This series part of a popular fad in the 80's in which studios had begun to create shows featuring younger versions of established cartoon characters.
