The Fortune is a 1975 film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and Stockard Channing, in which two con men compete for the millionaire heiress to a sanitary napkin fortune. It contains some of the funniest scenes in a Hollywood movie.[citation needed]

Bette Midler campaigned unsuccessfully for the female lead.[citation needed]

The film opened to decidedly mixed reviews and poor box office, though its reputation has built considerably over the years. Despite this, as of 2006 it is still unavailable on DVD.
