The Great Waltz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Waltz is a stage and screen musical which uses themes by Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II. It debuted on Broadway in 1934 and was made into a motion picture by MGM in 1938. Later, with lyrics and musical adaptation by Robert Wright and George Forrest in the 1970 stage revival and the 1972 film remake. The original stage production featured lyrics by Desmond Carter while the 1938 film had a new book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

The story of the show is loosely based on the real-life feud between the older and younger Strauss, allegedly because of the father's jealousy of his son's greater talent.
