IMDb profile

The Householder (1963) is a film by Merchant Ivory Productions, with a screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and James Ivory. It is based upon the novel of the same name by Jhabvala.

Satyajit Ray exerted an important influence both on Ivory and Merchant, as well as on this film. According to the official website for Merchant-Ivory, merchantivory.com:

"Ray himself supervised the music and re-cut the film for Merchant and Ivory. His legendary cameraman, Subatra Mitra, was the director of photography, and the film is infused with the fluid, restrained lyricism that characterizes Ray's work."

Prem (Shashi Kapoor) is a teacher who is married to Indu (Leela Naidu). Prem's mother interferes so much in the marriage that Indu leaves the marriage to return to her family. Prem searches for answers from a variety of people until he family gains the maturity to love his wife.
