SPIE — The International Society for Optical Engineering is a not-for-profit society that has become the largest international force for the exchange, collection and dissemination of knowledge in optics, photonics, and imaging engineering.[citation needed]

SPIE organizes conferences, courses and exhibitions covering all aspects and applications of optical engineering. SPIE publishes a variety of publications including four refereed journals: Journal Optical Engineering, the Journal Biomedical Optics, the Journal Electronic Imaging (in collaboration with The Society for Imaging Science and Engineering IS&T) and the Journal Microlithography, Microfabrication, and Microsystems. SPIE also publishes the member magazine SPIE Professional, the technical news website SPIE Newsroom, as well as conference proceedings and peer-reviewed handbooks, reference books, and tutorials.

SPIE is often seen as an American organization, but this is largely due to the fact that the U.S. has more optical engineers than any other country; however, SPIE has offices and chapters around the globe. Thirty-seven percent of SPIE Members are outside of North America.

The acronym SPIE once stood for "Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers". In 1981, the name was changed to "SPIE – The International Society for Optical Engineering." Founded in 1955, SPIE is the growing legacy[citation needed] of those who seek to learn, discover and innovate by building a better world with light.
