Beck (The Rock) is a professional bounty hunter hired by his boss, Walker, to go get his son, Travis (Sean William Scott), from the Amazon jungle. Beck wants out, and considers this his last job before retiring and opening his own restaurant. Beck heads down to the small town of "Hell Dorado" to find Travis and retrieve him from the mess he is in. The town is run by a crafty, vicious man Hatcher (Christopher Walken) who keeps the town under his thumb by forcing the locals to work in his mine at scab wages, and selling off the minerals for his own profit. Beck enters the local bar to find information about Travis, and runs into him. Travis is looking for "El Gato Diable", or "The Devils Cat", a lost artifact that could be worth millions to a museum. Beck forces Travis to cooperate, hand-cuffs him, and starts to drag him away. Hatcher, however, has heard that Travis might know where the Gato is, and won't let Mr. Beck take him away. Beating Hatcher's henchmen, Beck begins to drive to the runway before Hatcher can catch up to them. However, Travis forces the jeep off the road, and both Beck and Travis are forced to trek through the jungle.

Travis stops to take a pee, when Beck is caught in a trap set by the local Resistance. Travis runs afool of the disgruntled Beck, going so far as to make fun of his cooking, but ends up trapped himself. Hanging up-side-down, the two are attack by baboons, and after a "schuffle" the Resistance arrives. Travis negotiates with them, convincing them that he is an innocent and that Beck is a hired assassin and is here to kill them for Hatcher. The Resistance begins to fight Beck, until Mariana (Rosario Dawson) arrives and sets things straight. Mariana is the leader of the resistance and needs Travis to find the Gato. She wants to sell it off so she can buy things for her people, and free themselves from Hatcher's rule. After agreeing to help one another, the camp is attacked by Hatcher and his men. Mariana watches as people she loved die, they run to the boat off toward the location of the Gato, led by Travis.

Hatcher is angered that they fled his attack and is searching for them. On the river, Travis leads the group toward where the Gato is supposed to be, behind a waterfall. "Don't pee in the water," good advice. Swimming up into the cave, the group finds the Gato, behind a trap. Beck holds up one pillar while Travis grabs the Gato before the ceiling collapses. With the Gato in hand, the group sets off toward the town. Mariana, however, feeds Beck and Travis with a paralyzing fruit and steals the Gato before setting off and telling Beck where the airfield is. Waking up to more baboons, Beck arrives in town, and finds that Mariana has been captured, and Hatcher has the Gato. Beck makes a decision to fight Hatcher, free the town, and get Travis back to his father before both of them are killed.

Heading into town under the cover of a stampede, Beck and Travis are cornered. Abandoning his rule of "No Guns", Beck launches his assault, blowing up a truck in the process. Hatcher, amazed that they aren't dead yet, tells his lieutenant to take Mariana and the Gato and get out of town, while his personal body guards fight Beck. Travis stops the car, frees Mariana, and gets the Gato, but needs to make a decision - leave or help Beck. Beck beats the guards and faces Hatcher, who is defeated with the help of the locals. Travis decides to come back home with Beck, leaving the Gato with Mariana. Arriving in the states, Beck feeds Walker and his goons the paralyzing fruit he brought back. After saying goodbye to his father, Travis leaves with Beck to start a restaurant Beck has always wanted to.

Spoilers end here.

The film's working titles were Helldorado and Welcome to the Jungle.

The football clips shown when Beck is describing the bodyguards in the club are not NFL clips, but rather clips from Vince McMahon's XFL

The film is titled as "Welcome to the Jungle" in some territories, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

In Mexico it is known as El Tesoro del Amazonas (The Treasure of the Amazon).

In Brazil Bem Vindo à Selva. (Welcome to the Jungle)

In Russia Сокровища Амазонки (The Treasures of the Amazon).

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a cameo appearance at the start of the film. The Rock's character is walking into a nightclub about to confront a group of professional footballers. Schwarzenegger passes by and says to The Rock "Have fun," as if to pass the torch of action star to Rock, who eventually engages in a fight with the group and wins.

Despite the actor being Scottish, and even wearing a kilt and playing the bagpipes in the course of the film, Ewen Bremner's character speaks with a heavily-affected Northern Irish accent.

The name of the fish Beck calls a "penis-eating minnow" is the candirú.

The name of the hallucinogenic paralyzing fruit that Beck and Travis eat is "konlabos," although the actors are actually eating pears inside fake shells. The konlabos is not a real fruit, although it bears a resemblance to the cherimoya.
