"The World Is Yours" is the third single by rapper Nas, and his best known song, from his debut album, Illmatic. The song was produced by Pete Rock (who also sings the song's chorus), and features a sample of "I Love Music" by Ahmad Jamal and a sample of "It's Yours" by T La Rock. A remix of the song was produced by Q-Tip featuring similar but new lyrics; both it and the original were released by Columbia Records as singles, and promoted with music videos. The reflective lyric, "I need a new nigga for this black cloud to follow/Cause while it's over me it's too dark to see tomorrow" summed up frustration with the unique obstacles of inner city life. Jay-Z, Nas' one time rival, also sampled a portion of "The World Is Yours" for the chorus of his first single, "Dead Presidents." The name of this song is taken from the beginning of the infamous movie Scarface (1983), where a banner reads: The World is Yours. Many of the visual themes explored in the video are synonymous to the Mafioso image of Scarface, a fictional character highly lauded in hiphop.
At one point "The World is Yours" can be heard in the background to a scene in Antwone Fisher [1]. The song is also featured in the soundtrack to the popular video game, Tony Hawk's Underground.
It can be found on Nas' greatest hits album, The Best of Nas. It was independently ranked as the seventh greatest rap song of all time.[1]
