The thoracic plane is a plane used to divide the mediastinum into a superior mediastinum and inferior mediastinum. (The inferior is further divided into an anterior mediastinum, middle mediastinum, and posterior mediastinum.)
It divides through the body at the fourth intercostal space.[1][2][3]
