Tikamgarh is a city in the central India state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Tikamgarh District.
Until Indian independence in 1947, Tikamgarh, formerly called Tehri, was part of the kingdom of Orchha, which was founded in the 16th century by the Bundeli chief Rudra Pratap, who became the first Raja of Orchha. In 1783 the capital of the state was moved to Tehri, about 40 miles south of Orchha, which was home to the fort of Tikamgarh, and the town eventually took the name of the fort.
As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Tikamgarh had a population of 68,572. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Tikamgarh has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Tikamgarh, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
