Timia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Timia is a town in northern Niger situated at an oasis in the Aïr Mountains. Attractions in the Tuareg town include a seasonal waterfall, a former French fort and the nearby ruined town of Assodé.
Timia is an oasis that looks like the Garden of Eden at first site to a weary traveller, if by chance you have travelled from Iferouane in the north it will be the first green place you have seen for days. If you come from Agadez by four wheel drive you will have traveled on a dirt road for over six hours.
About 3km away from the oasis is the main town of Timia, founded there undoubtedly because of the water that is found because of the mergence of three valleys that end just above the famous oasis.
Besides the waterfall oasis that makes Timia one of the best tourist destinations in Niger, Timia offers something that seems to be impossible to find in most of Niger and that is fresh fruit. Orchards and fruit groves line both sides of the valleys in and out of Timia, where water is hand pumped up to them and distributed by an interesting but simple irrigation system. If you did not know about Timia before you won’t forget the experience, there is nothing close to eating a ripe orange straight off the tree when you have just spent several days in the Sahara.
If you are really lucky and have picked the right night to arrive and have guides that travel to Timia often then you may even get to see a traditional Tuareg dance. If you are real lucky that is.
