Growing up in a large family, young Tito Jackson originally hid his musical talent from his father. While his father was at work, Jackson would play his father's guitar while his siblings danced and sang. [1] It wasn't until a young Jackson broke a string on the guitar that father Joseph learned about his musical aspirations. Joseph was then inspired to form his three sons into a band; eventually, younger brothers Marlon and Michael joined the group, which became the legendary Jackson 5.

Throughout his 27-year tenure as member of the Jackson 5, Jackson was known as "the quiet member" of the group, although his family will tell you that this was not at all the case. [2] Though he played guitar while on tour with his brothers, he didn't play guitar on any of the Jackson 5's Motown singles and albums. Jackson was finally recorded playing on a Jacksons album after the group left Motown for CBS Records in 1976. Tito released his own solo album in 2003 called "I Gotta Play", and there are rumors of an R U Ready? album in the works. Jackson, like his father, managed his own sons' career, helping the brother group 3T find worldwide fame in the mid-1990s. In 1997, Jackson joined his brothers onstage to accept their induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Tito spent 2006 in the studio working on another solo project, which has yet to be released. The set will be produced by his three sons, who comprise the band 3T. [1].

Jackson married only once, eloping with Dominican Delores "Dee Dee" Martez in 1972. They divorced in 1990, having had three sons who are collectively known as the R&B trio 3T):

  1. Toriano Adaryll "Taj," Jr. (4 Aug 1973),
  2. Taryll Adren (6 Aug 1975) and
  3. Tito Joe "T.J." (16 Jul 1978).

On August 27, 1994, Martez was murdered by her boyfriend Donald Bohana for apparently refusing to lend Bohana money to cover nearly $2 million in debts [3].

  • Tito was the only member of the Jackson 5 to eschew the Jheri curl look of the 1980s. He did however have it for a small time on the Victory tour, but later said "It just didn't fit me" when asked about it in 2001.
