The Clawson Toads were founded in 1989 and were originally known as the East Lansing Toads. They made the move to Clawson, Michigan in December of 1995. They are most famous for their World Championship in ESPN's Baseball Challenge in the first-half segment of 2003, when they out-scored the runner-up, the Grondalski Gems, by a mere six points and won the top prize (a Sharp Aquos LCD TV). Nearly 200,000 teams competed. The Toads, who led in the standings for various stretches of the season, entered the final day of the contest down by 21 points, but an extremely productive lineup of Paul LoDuca, Todd Helton, Jolbert Cabrera, Vinny Castilla, Jose Reyes, Tom Goodwin, Preston Wilson, Sammy Sosa, Ken Harvey and the Mariners pitching staff (Joel Pineiro, Aaron "Big Country" Taylor, and Jeff Nelson) amassed an impressive 70 points to put the Toads back on top at the end of the segment.

The Toads followed-up their championship 2003 first half with a solid sixth place finish for the second half. Although there was no prize for sixth (only the top three scores in the world win a prize), the Toads' combined score of 9892 was the best for the whole baseball season.

The Toads have competed in football, hockey and college basketball in addition to baseball. They have won a total of 24 league championships.
