Tom Cashman was born in Blackrock in Cork City in 1957. He was the son of Mick Cashman, a great goalkeeper with Blackrock and Cork in the 1950s and 1960s. Cashman's uncle, Jimmy Brohan, was also a famed inter-county hurler. He played with Cork in the 1950s an 1960s and, in spite of never winning an All-Ireland medal, is regarded as one of the all-time greats of the game. Other relatives also had sporting success in various codes, including soccer and camogie. Cashman had his own hurling success at an early age. In 1971 he won the inaugural Féile na nGael competition with Blackrock. This was an inter-county hurling competition for players under the age of fifteen. Cashman followed in his father's footsteps by playing in goal, however, he soon made the switch to become an outfield player and made it onto the Cork minor team.

In 1974 Cashman won both All-Ireland minor hurling and football medals, a rare achievement. Two years later in 1976 he won an All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship title with Cork before going on to make his senior debut in the National Hurling League. Cashman rounded off the year by winning a Cork County Championship medal with Blackrock. In 1977 he became a full member of the Cork senior hurling team, winning his first Munster and All-Ireland in the same year. Cashman also collected his first All-Star Award. In 1978 he had yet another successful year. He won his second Munster and All-Ireland medals, followed by a second All-Star. He also won a Railway Cup medal with Munster, before claiming a second county title with Blackrock.

In 1979 Cashman won a third Munster title in-a-row, however, there was no All-Ireland success for him on this occasion. He did win an All-Ireland Club title with Blackrock, and finished off the year with another County Championship. The next two years brought him back-to-back National Hurling League titles, as well as a second Railway Cup medal. In 1982 and 1983 he won his fourth and fifth Munster hurling medals, however, Cork were defeated by Kilkenny in both All-Ireland finals. A sixth Munster medal in 1984 paved the way for Cashman to collect his third All-Ireland medal with a victory over Offaly. His seventh Munster hurling medal was won in 1985, with his eighth and final one being collected in 1986. That year Cashman captained Cork, and led them to All-Ireland victory over Galway. It was to be Cashman's last major success with Cork. He retired from inter-county hurling in 1988 after a defeat by Tipperary. In retirement Cashman went on to become a selector on the Cork senior team under Jimmy Barry-Murphy, before becoming manager of the side in 2001. His period in charge coincided with a downturn in Cork's fortunes and he left after one championship season in charge. Tom was astonishingly skilful, as skilful as ever there was. He could lift a ball in a melee of players better than anyone and had extraordinary first touch. One memorable vignette was in a league game against Tipperary, a Tipp back was running out bouncing the ball on his hurley. Tom came from behind, flicked the ball which came over the Tipp man's shoulder. Tom doubled on it and it sailed between the posts. The Tipp back looked around in astonishment. On another day against Clare, Jimmy Barry Murphy and Sean Stack went up for a high ball. It fell to earth. Tom was waiting below, met the ball in midair and put it between the posts with a simple double.
