Secret operative, Sam Fisher, is framed by an enemy. Follow Fisher as he revisits flashbacks from the time he was Navy SEAL to the missions in Splinter Cell: Double Agent and beyond, in order to uncover the truth and clear his name.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The game starts off in the year 2009, after the events of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Sam Fisher sneaks into the graveyard where his daughter, Sarah, who has been recently killed in a car accident, has been buried. Fisher is captured at this gravesite, taken into custody and interrogated. During this time, Sam recalls past events that are played as missions.

The first flash back mission is set in Colombia back in 1992. Fisher is at this time a member of the Navy SEALs. His commanding officer, Douglas Shetland, has been captured by FARC guerrillas. Going against the direct order of the commanding officer, he performs a solo rescue mission of the commander.

However, in the end, Sam is still found guilty for murdering Lambert. In the last mission, Sam steals the proof and escapes, setting the stage for Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

While Ubisoft's official Splinter Cell website treats this as an official game in the series[1], the game is mostly not consistent with either version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. The Double Agent levels were changed dramatically in the console and PC versions and the timeline was also changed. Note that levels in either version of Double Agent are not consistent with each other as well. Splinter Cell Conviction will determine whether Lambert lived or not, and which version of the story is definitive. Until that time, the game is widely considered non-canonical by the fans.[citation needed]
