IMDb profile

Tom and Jerry: The Movie is a 1993 animated feature film, the first feature to star MGM's cat-and-mouse team Tom and Jerry, and the only wide release Tom and Jerry feature to be released theatrically, but Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry had a limited theatrical run part of Kidtoon Films.

The film is a departure from typical Tom and Jerry cartoons: Tom and Jerry have a new look in this film, giving spoken dialogue lines they didn't have in the cartoons. The duo works together to help an orphan girl in trouble, and the film contains numerous musical numbers. The film was received poorly by critics and viewers alike.

Richard Kind provided the voice of Thomas "Tom" Jasper Cat, and Dana Hill (the voice of Max Goof in the Disney animated series, Goof Troop) provided the voice of Gerald "Jerry" Mouse. This film was directed by Phil Roman, produced by Film Roman for Turner Entertainment, distributed in North America by Miramax Family Films, and originally released to movie theaters on July 30, 1993. It proved to be a huge box office failure, grossing only $3.5 million, largely due to the fact that it was released in direct competition with Jurassic Park.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Robyn Starling, the daughter of Mr. Starling, is left behind with her horrid Aunt Figg when her dad goes away. Robyn runs away, and meets up with Tom and Jerry, who were left behind when their owners moved, on the street. Aunt Figg and her evil laywer Lickboot make a reward of a million dollars for the return of Robyn, who they wish to sell for a ransom, engulfed by love of money. Robyn is recaptured, but manages to escape yet again, with help from Tom and Jerry. At this point, everybody is looking for the million dollar girl, and Aunt Figg and Lickboot manage to get to Robyn's escape destination first. What was planned as another capture quickly goes wrong when an oil lamp is knocked on the floor. As the house goes up in flames, Mr Starling comes and rescues Robyn. Tom and Jerry are rescued too and taken to a new home where they both promise not to trick each other ever again. But the pair have soon reverted back to their old ways, and the movie finishes with the classic scene of Tom chasing Jerry into the distance.

Spoilers end here.

Tom and Jerry: The Movie was considered to be a flop to critics and audience members. It did not live up to the hype as the original Tom and Jerry MGM cartoon shorts. Along with the criticism, the characters, Tom and Jerry, spoke like human beings did, such as, Tom saying "I'm Tom", and Jerry saying "I'm Jerry", did not connect with the Tom and Jerry franchise at all. However in the film, Tom and Jerry's faces were a little different than in the MGM cartoons. It featured some characters that did not appear in any Tom and Jerry adaptations, prior to this film.
